A CITY man who was jailed for nine years after being convicted of a litany of sex crimes against young boys, was released from jail yesterday (Tuesday) after serving just four years of his sentence. Sean Barry (56), a former Rosminian Brother, was accused of committing the crimes during the 1970s at St. Joseph's Industrial School, Ferryhouse, Clonmel and at the Rosminian's summer residence in Woodstown, Co. Waterford.

When he was dismissed from the Order in 1980, he returned to work in the city at Harvey Printers on the Waterford Industrial Estate and resided for a time in the Hillview area of the city. He was convicted of fourteen charges of sex abuse on children in 1999 and sentenced to nine years in prison, with the last three years suspended. He was convicted before the current legislation came into force, which means that he will not be placed on a sex offenders list.
